Happy New Year!

Dallas and I wanted to take a little time to look back over the last year. It certainly has been a busy one! We attended several weddings, I defended my dissertation proposal, Frankie turned one, and we moved to Philadelphia. Not too shabby!

Dallas and I spent most of our time this fall on the hunt for a job (Dallas) and an internship position (me). I will hopefully match to an internship site on February 20th, and then we will have a better picture of where we’ll be! For now, it’s looking like the east coast or Chicago. Dallas is busy sending in applications, so he might know something this spring. It’s very exciting to be almost done with grad school. These applications really feel like the light at the end of the tunnel. Dallas will hopefully graduate spring 2015, and I’ll be not far behind in spring of 2016. Dr. and Dr. Swift? Drs. Lauren and Dallas Swift? Not sure how that one is going to sound…

Next year promises to be a big year for us. For one, hopefully Dallas will have a semi-permanent job! Yippee! We’ll probably be moving again (backyard for Frankie?), we have lots of fabulous weddings to attend, and we might even squeeze in a few wine classes and date nights! We’re mostly just feeling excited to be finishing up grad school and getting a better sense of where we’ll be for the next 3-5 years. We’ll keep you all posted!

Happy New Year!

So long 2012

This post may be a week or two late, but we wanted to wish all of our friends and family a happy holidays! It’s been quite the year for us. In the past year, we got married and moved. Dallas submitted a first-author publication and brewed a whole bunch of beer. I earned my masters degree and started an antibullying program in Delaware community centers and schools. Not bad! Thanks to everyone who helped us get through it one piece.

Resolutions for 2013:

1) Eat out less.
2) Do laundry more than once per month.
3) Enjoy our honeymoon.

My prediction is that we end up one for three. Guess which one!

Happy Birthday Dallas!

Dallas turns the big 2-4 today. Happy birthday to him! Here’s what we’re doing to celebrate his birthday (er…birth-weekend).

  • Surprise (!) breakfast today
  • Some sort of delicious dinner on Friday
  • Visiting family in Baltimore on Saturday
  • Beer tasting!

Most exciting is BEER TASTING! About a month ago, I bought Dallas a home brew kit as an early birthday present. It was quite the process, but we now have about a gallon of IPA fermented and carbonating (hopefully?) under the kitchen sink! We can’t wait to test it out. We’re hoping that 1) it’s drinkable and 2) it’s alcoholic, but we’d probably settle for one or the other. Here’s hoping!

We don’t always eat beef

…but when we do, we prefer Beef Wellington. Specifically, we’re crazy about the recipe we With a heart!received from John and Molly Fitzpatrick during our visit to Ithaca. This was our first attempt at the tasty dish, and let me just say, happy Valentine’s Day to us. We paired it with Cabernet Sauvignon. So. Delicious.

To be honest, we’re not really the Valentine’s Day types. We like to be pretty low key about it since we figure that if we wait until today to remind each other that we care, our relationship is going to be in trouble roughly 364 days out of the year. Still, I don’t mind using it as an excuse for more expensive food than usual, great wine, and way too much candy (Thanks for the chocolates, Mom and Dad!). Lauren seems to be on board with this plan, too, judging by the goofy smile on her face and her food coma position on the couch post-dinner.

The rest of our night will be devoted to catching up with How I Met Your Mother episodes, and, I suppose, some extra romantic reminders for Lauren that she is one for me. I think she’s pretty awesome, and luckily for me, I think she likes me, too. I guess I can get into the Valentine’s Day spirit after all!

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

Happy Holidays!

Hi everyone! It has been far too long since Dallas and I posted. I can’t believe we’ve been engaged for almost three months already! We’ve been very busy with wedding planning and graduate school. Highlights from the past few months include planning our October wedding in Chicago (check out the new wedding part of our site!), Dallas publishing his first research article in a peer-reviewed journal, and spending time with our families over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now, we’re together in Santa Barbara celebrating the new year. We can’t wait to see what 2012 brings!

Happy holidays!
